Power and Authority of Missionaries

Hey y'all! :)

This week has been great. Probably the greatest week of the transfer so far. :) I will get to that though. The week has gone so fast! I swear it was just a couple hours ago that I was sitting at this computer writing home last Monday.

Have you noticed any difference in your missionary work during or as a result of the recent presidential election? Did the fact that Mitt Romney is a member of the Church affect your missionary labors or questions about the Church? Has it been good, bad, or indifferent in your respective missions?

In answer to your question about the recent election, I didn't notice much a difference. I have had people mention Mitt Romney and tell me I should vote for him (or tell me they voted for him). But that is about the extent of it. Now if the fact that he was a member of the church and that caused people to listen to us when they may not have otherwise... I have no idea. Nobody has mentioned it.

Is there anything special you want from home?

um..... I can't think of anything really..... thanks for asking though.

What was the hardest thing you faced this week?

Sister Nelson getting ready to go home next Monday. I'm really going to miss her. We have gone through so much together. Thankfully I will see her next summer, so it will is not that bad. 

What was the most joyous experience you had this week?

Seeing the power and authority of our calling as missionaries. I'll try to explain what happened, but I know it isn't going to be as great as the actual experience. Feelings are hard enough to communicate verbally let alone through an email. I pray the Spirit will help those who read this feel the excitement and emotion behind what I write.

So Friday after district meeting we went out tracting in the rain. :) It was pretty fun. We prayed with a couple people, but didn't find any new people to teach. We also checked on some less active members. While we were checking on them Sister Obena saw from across the parking lot another one of our less active members. It was so perfect! We didn't know where he was living, but now we do. :) We were able to talk to him and invite him to church and the ward activity that night. It was all a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

Now, if that would have been all that happened that day I would have been happy. I knew that we had worked hard and had used the Lord's time wisely, even though we didn't see a whole lot of things happen from the work we had done. However, the Lord blessed us with so much later that evening! Both Sister Nelson and I both had the feeling that since we had been working so hard the Lord was going to provide a miracle for us later that evening. We knew our bishop had invited his friend, [Name withheld], who is not a member to the ward Christmas party. I had this thought that our miracle was going to be with [Name withheld]. It was a very quick thought that left as quick as it came.

Well we get to the Christmas party and [Name withheld] is there. (Originally he wasn't going to be there, but things happened a few days earlier to where his plans changed and he would be able to make it). We talked with [Name withheld] the whole time. After the Christmas party was over Sister Nelson and I sat and talked to him for nearly 2 hours! (Sister Obena was helping clean up)

At first [Name withheld] was doing most of the talking and we sat and listened to what he was saying. I did get worried that we wouldn't be able to share much with him about the gospel because he kept talking about other things. But we sat and listened to [Name withheld] and the things he wanted to share with us. Then [Name withheld] told us of a near death experience he had. For the sake of time, his story reminded me of Alma the Younger. (see Alma 36:6-16) Both Sister Nelson and I thought of Alma 36 and shared the story with him. We told him about how Alma experienced the same thing he did and how he turned to Christ and repented of his sins. I wish you could have seen [Name withheld]'s face while we shared that story with him. He was listening so intently to what we were saying.

Sister Nelson asked [Name withheld] if he had ever read the Book of Mormon before. At first he didn't want to read it. He was concerned that it was all the doctrines of Joseph Smith. We made it clear that the Book of Mormon only contained the doctrine of Jesus Christ. [Name withheld] had some other concerns about the Book of Mormon. I had the impression to be bold and straightforward with him in bearing my testimony of the Book of Mormon and of prophets. So that's what I did. (and so did Sister Nelson.) The spirit was so strong! I could hardly sit still.

Sister Nelson gave him a 1 minute version of the 1st lesson. As I sat and listened to her speak I could feel the power and authority in the words she spoke. I knew that she was speaking by the Spirit and that the things we shared with [Name withheld] were true. (As a missionary I know we have power and authority to preach the gospel and that people see missionaries in a different way. However, since I'm around other missionaries all the time and have that power and authority to preach the gospel it is hard for me to always see the difference, even though I know it is there.)

At one point [Name withheld] said something about how we can't take our families with us after we die. Sister Nelson bore a POWERFUL testimony of the reality that families can be together forever. We know [Name withheld] felt the power behind the things we said by the Spirit to him. He even told us that he liked the Spirit he felt when we spoke. By the end of our conversation with him he took a copy of the Book of Mormon. :)

Interestingly enough, when he was talking at the beginning there was a lot of commotion around us. People were cleaning up the gym and it was pretty loud and crazy. Once Sister Nelson and I started to bear our testimonies the gym had cleared out and nobody was there. [Name withheld] made the comment to our bishop afterwords that Sister Nelson and I were "spiritual powerhouses". I know it was the Spirit working through us to soften his heart though. I know he felt that way because we are called of God to preach His gospel by His Spirit. He also told Bishop (and later us) that he was amazed at how the time flew by while we were talking. He was amazed that even though there were people around us he felt like the three of us were the only ones in the gym. (we felt the same way)

We saw [Name withheld] yesterday and he has read from the Book of Mormon. He still has questions and concerns that are very common. However, we will start teaching him this week. :) He is a great guy and we absolutely love him!

He taught us some valuable lessons too. I mentioned that if he is in a room with 500 people he didn't know, but these people know Christ and believe in Christ he should get 500 invitations to come unto Christ. He talked a lot about how we have things to offer people and we shouldn't leave anybody without invitations to come unto Christ. This doesn't just apply to full-time missionaries. If anything it applies to regular members of the Church. We must OPEN OUR MOUTHS and share this gift we have been given. It was very profound. I will never forget it!

So that was probably the most memorable experience I had this week. However, that wasn't the only one. On Wednesday we were teaching a lady from China. She is having a hard time understanding Jesus Christ as the only one who could be the Savior of the world. We had planned to teach her the Plan of Salvation but as we were studying that morning the inspiration came to us to use Alma 34:8-16. As a companionship we came up with this analogy of Christ being the only doctor who can heal us. I can't go into the whole analogy, (I'm getting tired of typing and running out of time) but we taught her using this analogy. It ended up being a super spiritual lesson! She was so excited because she understood and it was clear to her. :)

What was the funniest thing you saw or felt this week?

haha! One of the members of our ward is a little Korean lady. We were visiting her on Saturday and she told us that if you put "good" honey on your face it makes it soft and gets rid of peach fuzz. She gave us some "good" honey and Sister Nelson and I put it on our face that night. The honey didn't do anything except make our faces sticky and make for some pretty great pictures and videos. We were laughing so hard! Sister Obena thought we were crazy! :) I will send some pictures.

I say it every week, but I love being a missionary! It is hard work and I cry about it sometimes, but it is the BEST thing ever! My testimony is growing so strong! But even more importantly I am becoming more deeply converted to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. A testimony is important because it leads to deep and lasting conversion. However having a testimony of something doesn't do us much good if we are not converted to the gospel. 

The Bible Dictionary says this about conversion, "Conversion. Denotes changing one’s views, in a conscious acceptance of the will of God (Acts 3:19). If followed by continued faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism in water for the remission of sins, and the reception of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, conversion will become complete, and will change a natural man into a sanctified, born again, purified person—a new creature in Christ Jesus (see 2 Cor. 5:17). Complete conversion comes after many trials and much testing (see Luke 22:32; D&C 112:12–13). To labor for the conversion of one’s self and others is a noble task, as in Ps. 51:13; Dan. 12:3; James 5:19–20; D&C 18:15–16. Cf. Alma 26."

A New Companion, Now a Trainer

Hey everybody! This week has been an interesting one. We got our new missionary, Sister Allgood. She really is Allgood. :) She is a very dedicated, obedient, faithful missionary. I feel like she has more to teach me than I have to teach her.

Hunter received the priesthood on Sunday. That was amazing! :) I have loved to see Jeff and Hunter and their progression in the gospel. Anytime I get sad or discouraged, I think of those two and how their lives have changed in the last 3 or 4 months of knowing them.

To answer your questions:

What is a common question you get from investigators?

A lot of people have questions and concerns about the apostasy. A lot of people don't see the need for a restoration. There are a lot of different questions that arise from that concern. That is probably a very common thing.

What is the biggest fear that holds investigators back?

I don't really know. I think it is different for everybody because each person is so unique.

Tell us about your new companion. What is her name and where is she from?

Sister Michelle Allgood from Hyrum, UT. I told you about her at the beginning of the letter.

What are your new companion's strengths that you have noticed so far?

She is fearless. She will talk to anybody and everybody. She takes missionary work seriously. None of the time she has is her time. It is all the Lord's and she works hard to use every minute of time wisely. She is going to work miracles in this mission.

Questions and Answers from 24 Sep

Hey there!

The week was pretty good. I mean, I don't think I have any super huge news for the week. I'm glad you just sent me a list of questions dad. I was worried I wasn't going to have any question to answer. :)

1) Do you ever have webcasts in the mission? Meaning, the mission home streams a training or transfer meeting via the Internet. Missionaries can then watch by going to a URL like http://streaming.lds.org.

Nope. Our mission really isn't that big. I think the farthest area from the mission home is probably about 2 hours. Whenever there is a big event we travel to the stake center in Moore, OK (which is also were the mission home is). From Norman we are only about 15 minutes away.

2) If you do watch streamed events, do you have the URL?

3) When do you have your next event?

We have transfers on Wednesday, so that is a "big" event I guess. I will get to meet my new missionary on Wednesday. I'm pretty excited. :)

4) What do you hope to accomplish in the next two months?

Oh boy... that is a loaded question. I have so much I want to accomplish and I feel like my time on the mission is so short. Okay... in the next two months.... I really want to work harder than I ever have on my mission up to this point. I want to become better at using and applying the principles of gospel leadership. Like I said, I have a lot of things I want to accomplish. I really like what Elder Callister said (see below in italics).

5) What is something new you learned this week?

Saturday we had the chance to hear from Elder Tad R. Callister and Elder Johnathan C. Roberts of the Seventy. I learned a lot from them. Some of the things that stood out to me was when Elder Callister spoke about becoming a consecrated missionary. He talked about how important it is to put all your heart and strength into the work. There is one thing that has really stuck with me from Elder Callister. It was one of the last things he said. He said, "The Lord doesn't expect perfection tomorrow, but He does expect progression." That is my favorite quote right now. It was exactly what I needed to hear.

Elder Roberts talked about obedience. He used the story of Nephi and Laman and Lemuel. His question was this. "Were Laman and Lemuel obedient?" At first a lot of people said no. Then Elder Callister pointed out that they were obedient. Laman and Lemuel went back to Jerusalem to get the brass plates, they went back to get the daughters of Ishmael, they stayed with their father in the wilderness. The key difference between Nephi and Laman & Lemuel was a willing heart. It isn't enough to simply obey to obey. It is crucial to have a willingness to serve the Lord. Obedience should come from a sincere love of God.

One thing he said that really sunk in deep for me was in reference to Doctrine & Covenants 130:19 "And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come."

Elder Roberts connected the words Knowledge & Intelligence to Diligence and Obedient. As we are obedient to the Lord and diligently do what he asks us to do our understanding of things is increased. That really hit me. There are so many things I don't understand and sometimes it is frustrating. However, the more I am obedient and diligent I will be able to have a better understanding of things. He also promised the whole mission that increased joy and understanding will come through obedience.

6) Is it beginning to feel like Fall yet at all? Still looks like 100 degree weather there.

A few weeks ago it got pretty cool. It dropped down to the 60's and 70's. That felt wonderful. We are definitely back up in the 90's and low 100's. To be honest though, it doesn't feel that hot. Fall should be coming soon though. I am so excited! Fall has always my favorite time of the year.

7) What is your favorite day of the week and why?

Ummm..... I don't know if I have a favorite day of the week or not. I like them all and they are all fairly the same. The only day that is somewhat different is Monday.

8) Are you still in a threesome, or did Sister Nelson leave already?

Yup. Sister Nelson leaves on Wednesday, but we will get a new Sister and will still be in a trio.

Eric: How is the weather, and do you like it?

The weather here the past few days has been HOT AND HUMID. It feels like summer time in Utah, just add humidity. I'm not looking forward to summer. Last summer the heat was pretty intense. It was 115-120 degrees outside for 3 weeks straight. I guess July and August here are pretty brutal. haha! People keep telling me that even at night it doesn't cool off. I will be drinking quite a lot of water! :D

Dad: What is Sister Buckley's first name and where is she from?

Dad: Did you here any tornado sirens during the storms?

A few weeks ago the sirens went off at 2am. Every Saturday the siren go off at noon as a test, so I hear the siren once a week.

Dad: What are Sister Buckley's greatest qualities?

Oh where should I start! Sister Buckley is so much fun to be around and always makes me laugh. She is a very powerful teacher. She loves to learn new things. She calls herself a "scripture nerd" she loves the scriptures. She loves to talk about the gospel. Our companion studies are always great! :D

Dad: I posted the 50 questions to your blog and challenged everyone to read the Book of Mormon and find the answers.

AWESOME!!!! I love it! Thanks so much dad! Will you also find on YouTube the song Come See the Light by Freddie Ashby and post the link. Sister Buckley showed this song to me and I LOVE it! It is beautiful!

Dad: Will you please share one of your own defining moments?

I feel like have had quite a few defining moments in my life. The biggest one is kind of personal, so I will share another defining moment for me in my life. I would have to say my decision to move out and go to Snow College was a defining moment. I had to choose for myself if I wanted to keep doing the things I had been taught all my life. I had to choose for myself if I wanted to strengthen and develop my own testimony of the Gospel.

Nobody was around to tell me to go to church, to read my scriptures, etc. When I chose to do all those things because I wanted to and because I loved the Lord. I started to CHOOSE to become the woman God needs me to be. I'm still on that path, and will be my whole life. There isn't going to be an end to learning and growth. Life would be horrible if we weren't growing and learning all the time. I think thats why I love a mission. It is helping me learn so much about myself, about family, about my Savior, about Heavenly Father, about life. Things I wouldn't have learned by staying home. I love y'all so much! Thank for all your support and love! I love you!

Eric: What is the funniest thing that has happened this week?

This happened last week, but I forgot to tell everybody. Sister Bowles and I were driving in the car on our way out for the day. We had just gotten outside of our apartment complex when we saw an old man walking on the side of the road. We had a feeling he was lost. So we pulled over to ask him if he was okay. As soon as he started talking i knew he was lost. We pulled over and he just got right into our car. He thought we were going to give him a ride. Sister Bowles and I got out of the car and went to help him. This guy had somehow gotten out of the Alzheimer's and dementia unit that is right next to our apartment. :) It was so funny!!! The Elders just happened to be riding their bike past us and ran over to help us. They took our car and parked it somewhere safe since it was just sitting in the middle of the road.

Dad: When do you think we can get an audio update? We would sure love one. As far as I know, I have sent all SD cards. I sent both the SD and microSD card together.

Like I said, I promise to give you one by next Monday. :) You still have one of my SD cards. I sent pictures to you on it. You have sent me back one SD card and my microSD card for the audio recorder. I have one more card that goes to my camera. It is black.

Dad: What is the most unusual thing you have eaten so far?

On Saturday I had bratwurst, fried cabbage and German potato salad. I also had fried okra the other day. They weren't strange, just things I'd never tried before. I loved both of them though. :)

Dad: "By small and simple things, are great things brought to pass." How have you witnessed the hand of the Lord through small or great means this week?

That is a really great question! We met a lady from Germany on Saturday who claims to be atheist. She said she use to be Christian but doesn't understand why God would let bad things happened to innocent people. It was an interesting conversation. Sister Bowles asked her if she was happier when she believed in God or now. She said she was happier when she believed in God. We asked her some other questions on her belief in God. We invited her to come to church with us on Sunday. She said she would, but only because she liked us and thought we were interesting. haha! (she didn't end up coming to church. just for the record.) As we were leaving we gave her a hug because that's just what we do. We hug people A LOT. She walked up to her porch, we walked to our car. Next thing I know she turns around, runs down the stairs and to our car to tell us thanks for the hugs because she really needed them that day. :D It was such a sweet moment. It was great to know the Lord showed Ute His love for her through us. I told Sister Bowles that if that is all that results from that visit, it is totally worth it. There are so many other "Small and Simple Things" that happen all the time. I am going to start paying even more attention to those things. :) Thanks for the idea dad.

Dad: What did Easter mean to you this year?

Great question as well. I hadn't really thought of that. In Sunday school Sister Bowles and I taught the lesson and read the Easter story from the New Testament with the class. We talked a lot about Christ's atonement. Easter to me is a reminder that I would not be able to make it back to Heavenly Father with our Christ. It wouldn't matter what efforts I put forth, I can't make it back without Christ's grace and mercy

Hey family!! I sure love being a missionary! Even if it is hard and more or less the biggest roller coaster I've ever been on. haha! Sister Bowles and I have some exciting things up ourselves to help get the ward members more involved in missionary work. There are so many ways to do missionary work. It isn't just talking to somebody about church stuff. You can invite people to church activities, to church when you are giving a talk. There are SO MANY THINGS! :D Something I have learned while on a mission is that the full-time missionaries need the help of the members in finding people to teach. This work WILL NOT go forward as fast as it needs to without the members and the full-time missionaries working together in unity.

Dad, maybe for FHE y'all can have a lesson based from the finding chapter of preach my gospel, with an emphasis on the importance of members. There is such joy that comes from sharing the gospel. People may or may not accept the gospel, but you don't know until you share it with them. :D

This week has been great! We had six less active people at church yesterday!!!! It filled Sister Bowles and I with joy! I have learned that working with the less active people is just as important as working with the investigators, and active members of the church. Our purpose as missionaries is to build peoples faith.

We have been working with two less active Sisters and they are on their way back to the temple! I can't describe how happy Sister Bowles and I were when we heard this news. They are wonderful Sisters!

Working with less active members has also taught me how important visiting teaching is! I now understand how important it is. One of these Sisters had a great visit with her visiting teacher and us and the next Sunday came back to church after 5 years of not going and now is in the process of getting her temple recommend. :D During that visit Sister Bowles and I hardly said a word. Her visiting teacher really did the talking. She spoke by the Spirit and really connected with this sister. She was bold with her, but full of love and kindness. I have such a testimony of visiting teaching and I will not ever take it for granted ever again. I love you very much mom! I'm so thankful for all the prayers you say in my behalf. I am so grateful for the emails you send to me each week. :D I love to read them. I just wish I had more time to write more. So much happens during the week, its hard to keep track of everything. Dad: Are you serving in the Village Ward with Bishop Huff?

I sure am! Bishop Huff is awesome!

Dad: So do you meet at the chapel on 5020 NW 63rd ST?

Yes

Dad: What are some of the street names you have tracted on and the major street numbers from this week? Yes, I would like to google earth stalk you again. For example if you tracted by the chapel, you might say tracted on 5000 NW 63rd street. This does not give away the location of investigators or anything, but lets me see the area.

We've tracted on Andover Court and in apartment complexes just east of us. It's hard for me to remember where I've tracted. We haven't spend more than 2 or 3 hours a day tracting on a particular road. We ride our bikes to and from places a lot and stop and talk to people on our way to wherever we're going (like appointments or the library).

I am hesitant to tell you this, but it is a neat experience. I just don't want you to worry. I do want you to know I am being protected. The south part of our area is pretty ghetto. Everything from about 15th street down to Reno (end of our area) is a place we don't go if its dark. And we don't do much tracting down in that area.

The other day we had to go to 4th street. It was around 4 in the afternoon. As we drove down there to check on a referral, Sister Bowles and I felt very uneasy. We did contact the referral and they were not interested so we went to check on a less active in the area. As we pulled up to the house we both sat there. Sister Bowles said she just felt sick to her stomach about going to see the less active right now. I was also feeling uncomfortable and uneasy with the idea. So we left. As soon as we were out of the area we both felt like we could breath easy again. I know the Spirit was guiding us and protecting us. So like I said, please don't worry about me, but I did want to share that with everybody.

Also, the church is actually out of our area. Our area from east to west is May Avenue to Western Avenue. Our North to South Boundry is Coffee Creek to Reno avenue, more or less. :)

Eric: What did you not expect this week?

Eric, Something I didn't expect this week was to learn how important it is for members of the church to do missionary work. The missionaries have A LOT more success in finding and baptizing people when members of the church share the gospel with their friends and family and then invite them to have the missionaries teach them than if missionaries were to knock on a person's door. I also learned how important it is to really love others, even if they seem different. Not everybody chooses the right, but we still need to show them the same love that Jesus does.

Are you sending back my microSD card? Also, if you are going to Jenni's wedding, could you take a picture of them coming out of the temple. I would love to see a picture. :D Also, another towel would be nice. Tell Chris he can respond to my letter in an email if he wants.

Dad: What is your apartment address?

I can't think of it off the top of my head. I'll send it with my SD card today.

Dad: What is your area, district and zone?

I'm in the Village area in the Quail creek district, Quail creek zone.

Dad: What are you area boundaries?

I dunno... I took a picture of the map that has my area boundaries though so I'll send that.

Dad: I assume you have 6 week transfers like Elder Record, so what day is the next transfer in your mission?

Yes, 6 week transfers. However, I'll probably be in this area training for 12 weeks before I get transfered. Next real transfer is scheduled for April 11th, but I probably won't be transfered until May 23rd.

Dad: What did you do on P-day?

Last P-day I tried to recover from the cold I got on the first night here in OKC. I'm feeling much better now. We also cleaned the car and went shopping. I wrote letters too. We didn't really do anything to be honest.

Dad: Have you done any tracting? If so, what streets have you tracted on?

Yes.... I've done tracting. I couldn't tell you where I've been tracting though. It's been all over the place. My mission has this thing called 5 by faith. So anytime an appointment falls through or somebody isn't home we knock on 5 door or talk to 5 people before we leave that area. So I've been on a lot of streets. I think my area is about 10-15 miles going north and south and about 5-10 miles going East and West and its in the city so there are a TON of houses.
